I love getting perfume samples in my Sephora orders – I throw them in my purse or stow them in my desk at work and they’re a great way to try out new fragrances. A few months ago, I fell in love with a fragrance and completely used up the sample I got. It wasn’t even until the sample was gone that I realized I had been using a men’s cologne.
Maison Margiela ‘Replica’ Jazz Club has notes of musk, vanilla, tonka bean, vetiver, and tobacco leaves. While tobacco leaves and musk are fairly masculine notes, the vanilla and vetiver really lighten up the fragrance. My first impression was that it was a unisex fragrance, of course, until I realized that it’s billed exclusively as a men’s fragrance. I was upset immediately – I really wanted to adapt it as my daily fragrance. It stays on my skin for hours, even a full day, and a lot of my friends complimented me on it.
I scrolled down to the bottom of the Sephora listing for the fragrance one day – while still wistfully wishing it was unisex – until I realized that the product page is flooded with reviews from other women. Turns out, a lot of women use this as a women’s fragrance! “Ladies, don’t be afraid,” wrote one reviewer, “I use this all the time and it stays on my skin way longer than lighter fragrances.”
I took the plunge after that and purchased a bottle (it’s pretty pricey) and I’ve been using it every day ever since! About a month in, I’ve been using it consistently – even if I’m running out the door for errands, I can’t resist using a little bit of it. Regardless of your fragrance type, if you’ve found a fragrance that you’re in love with – forget the label and wear it! That’s what I did and I’m so excited I did!
